Uxbridge has played a bigger part in national history than its size suggests. The Battle of Britain Bunker, the underground No. 11 Group Fighter Command Operations Room on the former RAF Uxbridge site, controlled the fighter defence of south-east England in 1940 and later helped direct air cover for D-Day. Churchill visited on 16 August 1940 and spoke his famous words about the few near the bunker entrance. There is a lighter story too: the Crown and Treaty on Oxford Road hosted the failed peace talks between Charles I and Parliament in 1645, and its historic panelling was sold in 1924 to line an office in New York’s Empire State Building before being returned and reinstalled in 1953. Uxbridge station itself is Grade II listed, a 1938 Charles Holden design with stained glass by Erwin Bossanyi.

Uxbridge High School on The Greenway and Bishopshalt School on Royal Lane are the main state secondaries. At primary level there is Whitehall Infant School and Whitehall Junior School on Cowley Road, Hermitage Primary School on Belmont Road and Cowley St Laurence CofE Primary School on Worcester Road. For post-sixteen study, Uxbridge College on Park Road is part of HRUC and has a strong reputation, and Brunel University of London on Kingston Lane is on the doorstep. Uxbridge High Street is largely pedestrianised and anchored by two shopping centres. The Chimes, next to the tube station, has around seventy shops, cafes and restaurants plus an Odeon cinema with an IMAX screen. The Pavilions on Chequers Square covers the everyday end, with M&S, Primark, Iceland, Tesco Express and the usual names. Windsor Street is the historic and most characterful stretch, with the Grade II listed Queen’s Head, and the Grade II* listed Uxbridge Market House of 1788 still stands in the middle of the High Street. The Three Tuns and the Crown and Treaty are both listed pubs worth seeking out.

Fassnidge Park on Oxford Road was the first recreation ground given to the public in Uxbridge, opening in 1926, and it still has its bandstand, mock-Tudor shelters, bowling greens, tennis courts, a putting green, a playground and a skate ramp. Hillingdon Sports and Leisure Complex on Gatting Way has a fifty-metre indoor pool, sports hall, gym, athletics track and the restored 1935 open-air lido, a twelve-sided Art Deco star-shaped pool. To the west there is the Grand Union Canal towpath, Little Britain Lake at Cowley, the 42-square-mile Colne Valley Regional Park and Denham Country Park with its visitor centre and cafe.

Uxbridge is the western terminus of both the Metropolitan and Piccadilly lines, in Zone 6. Baker Street is around forty minutes direct on the Metropolitan and King’s Cross St Pancras roughly forty-five, while the Piccadilly runs direct to the West End calling at all stations. The SL8 Superloop express bus runs to White City and the U3 to Brunel University, Hillingdon Hospital, West Drayton and Heathrow Central. By road the A40 becomes the M40 at Junction 1, where the M25 also joins at Junction 16, and the A408 runs south towards the M4. Heathrow is six or seven miles, typically fifteen to twenty-five minutes by car.
