South Ruislip’s single biggest asset is its station, and it is worth understanding properly. It is served by both the Central line and Chiltern Railways, which means you can be at London Marylebone in as little as sixteen minutes. The station itself is a modernist landmark: a circular drum booking hall containing a concrete frieze inset with coloured ceramic and granite chips by the glass artist Henry Haig, and a distinctive winged platform canopy. It also holds number 29 of Mark Wallinger’s 270 Labyrinth artworks. There is American history here too. RAF South Ruislip was leased to the United States Air Force from 1949 to 1972, and in 1970 three teenagers whose fathers were stationed here formed the band America.

South Ruislip has a strong run of local schools. Deanesfield Primary School on Queens Walk sits directly alongside Queensmead School, which makes for a very simple route from reception through to sixth form. Also within reach are Bourne Primary School, St Swithun Wells Catholic Primary School, Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School and Field End Junior School, with Ruislip High School on Sidmouth Drive as a further secondary option. Shopping here is anchored by the Old Dairy on Victoria Road, built on the site of the former dairy. It houses an Asda superstore, a Cineworld cinema, Nando’s and The Gym Group, along with further retail and restaurant units. The wider area adds Sainsbury’s, Aldi, Lidl, The Range, Wickes and several large furniture retailers, which makes South Ruislip the place locals come for a big shop. The Black Bull on Victoria Road is the traditional local, with a pool room, a large garden, live music on Fridays and historic Ruislip photographs on the walls. Victoria Road itself carries the main run of everyday shops.

McGovern Park on West End Road is the headquarters of London GAA and the main venue for Gaelic football and hurling in Britain. It reopened in 2017 after a £4.17 million redevelopment and has a 1,950-seat stand, a clubhouse and function rooms. Kings College Playing Fields offers wide open grass for dog walking and sport, and the Yeading Brook corridor runs through the south of the area. Bessingby Park and Cavendish Recreation Ground are both close by, and Ruislip Woods National Nature Reserve is a short drive north. St Mary’s Church, listed Grade II in 2022, is worth a look for its seven-metre Portland stone crucifix.

South Ruislip station is in Zone 5 and served by two operators. Chiltern Railways runs direct to London Marylebone with a fastest time of sixteen minutes and an average of around twenty-one, with roughly twenty-five trains a day and services on to High Wycombe. The Central line takes you to Oxford Circus in about thirty-three minutes and on to Holborn, Bank and Liverpool Street. Bus routes E7 and 114 serve the area. The A40 runs along the southern edge, linking to the M40 and the M25 at Junction 16, and the A312 heads south towards Heathrow, roughly twenty to thirty minutes by car.
