Pinner High Street is the real thing: a sloping street of eighteenth-century and older buildings running up to the medieval parish church of St John the Baptist. Pinner Fair has been held here since Edward III granted its charter in 1336, and it still closes the High Street every May. In the churchyard you will find the Loudoun monument, better known as the floating coffin, a stone sarcophagus that appears to pass straight through a stone wedge. West House in Pinner Memorial Park is home to the Heath Robinson Museum, which opened in 2016 and holds nearly a thousand works by the illustrator, who lived on Moss Lane. Elton John was born in Pinner and grew up in Pinner Green, and the astronomer Sir Patrick Moore was born here too.

Pinner has one of the strongest school offers in outer London. Nower Hill High School and Pinner High School are both well regarded secondaries, and Haydon School sits just to the west. Pinner splits neatly in two for shopping. Bridge Street has the supermarkets and the familiar names, while the High Street above it is where the independents, cafes and restaurants are. The Queen’s Head at 31 High Street is Grade II listed and the oldest pub in Pinner, with origins traced back to 1540 and a sixteenth-century staircase still in place. The Oddfellows Arms on Waxwell Lane has a large garden and regular live music. Daisy’s in the Park at West House is a good spot for coffee after a walk. Hatch End, a few minutes north, adds another parade of restaurants and delis.

Pinner Memorial Park and Pinner Village Gardens have both won Green Flag awards. The Memorial Park has a pond, an aviary, a Peace Garden, a bowling green, a playground, a cafe and the Heath Robinson Museum; Pinner Village Gardens has tennis and basketball courts, table tennis and a junior parkrun. Pinner Park Farm is a scheduled monument, a surviving medieval deer park first recorded in 1273 and still farmland today. Add Pinner Recreation Ground, Montesole Playing Fields, Pinner Wood and Pinner Hill Golf Course and there is plenty of room to breathe.

Pinner station is on the Metropolitan line in Zone 5, with Baker Street around twenty-five to thirty minutes away and services continuing to King’s Cross St Pancras and the City. Hatch End, also in HA5, is on the London Overground Lioness line, giving you a second route into Euston and north to Watford Junction. North Harrow is the next Metropolitan stop south. By road the A404 runs north-west through Northwood to the M25 at Junction 18 and on to the M40. Heathrow is roughly eleven miles, usually twenty-five to thirty-five minutes by car.
