Northwood grew up around its railway station, which opened in 1887, and the streets still carry the name of the man who built it. Frank Murray Maxwell Hallowell Carew bought the Eastbury Estate that year and named the new roads after his own family, which is why you will find Maxwell Road, Murray Road, Hallowell Road and Carew Road all within a few minutes of each other. Green Lane remains the heart of the town, with a Waitrose, independent shops and cafes, and the Grade II listed former police station on Murray Road. Copse Wood, part of the Ruislip Woods National Nature Reserve, comes right up to the edge of the town. And a piece of pop history: in 1962 a fifteen-year-old Reginald Dwight took his first paid job playing piano at the Northwood Hills Hotel on Joel Street, several years before he became Elton John.

Schools are one of the main reasons families move to Northwood, and the choice is unusually good. On the state side you have Northwood School, Frithwood Primary School, Holy Trinity CofE Primary School, and Hillside Infant and Junior Schools. Green Lane is the main shopping street, running from the station up to Rickmansworth Road, with a Waitrose, a good run of independents, cafes and everyday services. Northwood Hills has its own separate parade along Joel Street, which is handy if you are living on that side. For a drink, The Gate on Rickmansworth Road is a Grade II listed timber-framed pub with a garden and a rotating range of cask ales. Mount Vernon Hospital and its specialist cancer centre are on the edge of the town, and Denville Hall on Ducks Hill Road has been a retirement home for actors and theatre professionals since 1926.

Northwood is unusually green for a London suburb. Copse Wood forms part of Ruislip Woods, the 726-acre National Nature Reserve that became the first urban National Nature Reserve in England in 1997, and it is a genuinely lovely place to walk. Golfers are spoilt: Haste Hill is a public 18-hole course on The Drive, Northwood Golf Club dates from 1891, and Moor Park Golf Club sits in parkland around an eighteenth-century mansion just to the north. There is also Northwood Recreation Ground, Hog’s Back Open Space in Northwood Hills, and a strong network of local clubs and community groups.

Northwood and Northwood Hills are both on the Metropolitan line in Zone 6, with Moor Park a stop further north for fast services. Baker Street is roughly thirty to thirty-five minutes depending on whether you catch a fast or an all-stations train, and the line runs on to King’s Cross St Pancras, Moorgate and Liverpool Street. By road the A404 takes you north-west to Rickmansworth and the M25 at Junction 18, and on to the M40.
