Eastcote has a secret history that most people walk past every day. The site off Lime Grove was RAF Eastcote, also known as HMS Pembroke V, where around 800 Wrens and 100 RAF technicians ran more than a hundred Bombe machines breaking Enigma traffic during the Second World War. From 1946 it became the very first headquarters of GCHQ, and stayed so until the move to Cheltenham in 1954. The site is now the Pembroke Park estate, with a commemorative plaque. Above ground, Eastcote House Gardens is the jewel: three and a half hectares of parkland with a walled garden, a herb garden, an orchard and a Grade II listed dovecote built without a licence in the 1500s.

Eastcote is a strong choice for families, with a good spread of infant and junior schools. Newnham Junior School and Newnham Infant and Nursery School are on Newnham Avenue, Coteford Infant and Coteford Junior Schools are on Fore Street, and Field End Infant and Field End Junior Schools sit on Field End Road. Field End Road is the high street, and it is a lovely run of interwar parades: Field End Parade from the mid-1920s, Deane Parade from 1935, plus Devon, Orchard and Abbotsbury Parades. You will find independent cafes, bakeries, a butcher, restaurants, everyday services and Eastcote Library at number 88, which opened in 1959 and still carries the Middlesex shield. For pubs, The Case is Altered on Southill Lane is Grade II listed and dates from the sixteenth century, and The Black Horse on High Road is an early nineteenth-century listed pub in the old village.

Eastcote House Gardens is the centre of local life, with events through the year, a walled garden and the Grade II listed coach house and dovecote. From there the Sheila Liberty footbridge takes you over the River Pinn into Long Meadow. Haydon Hall Grounds, home to Eastcote Cricket Club, and Warrender Park add more green space. The Celandine Route, a twelve-mile waymarked riverside walk along the River Pinn from Pinner to the Grand Union Canal at Cowley, runs straight through Eastcote House Gardens. Ruislip Woods National Nature Reserve, all 726 acres of it, is a short drive or bus ride north.

Eastcote station is on both the Metropolitan and Piccadilly lines in Zone 5, and the station buildings are Grade II listed, rebuilt to a Charles Holden design in the late 1930s. Baker Street is around thirty-one minutes on the Metropolitan, with peak services continuing to Aldgate. The Piccadilly runs into the West End via Acton Town and South Kensington, though for Heathrow you need to change at Acton Town. Bus routes 282, H13 and 398 serve the area. By road, West End Road runs south to the A40 at the Polish War Memorial, and Heathrow is around nine miles, usually twenty to thirty minutes by car.
