Hillingdon village is built around the Grade II* listed Church of St John the Baptist on Royal Lane, where a church has stood since the twelfth century. Its four-stage tower was rebuilt in 1629 and Sir George Gilbert Scott restored and extended the building from 1846. John Rich, the impresario credited with inventing English pantomime, is buried here. Opposite stands the Red Lion, a Grade II listed timber-framed inn probably sixteenth-century in origin, where Historic England records that Charles I stopped during his flight in April 1646. Hillingdon station is worth a mention too: rebuilt in 1992 in glass and steel, it won Underground Station of the Year in 1994 and a Civic Trust Award in 1996.

Hillingdon Primary School on Uxbridge Road and Ryefield Primary School on Ryefield Avenue are the main state primaries, with Oak Farm Primary School also serving the area. For secondary, Bishopshalt School is on Royal Lane, and Vyners School and The Douay Martyrs Catholic School are both a short distance north in Ickenham. On the independent side, St Helen’s College on Parkway is a co-educational prep school, and ACS Hillingdon International School occupies Hillingdon Court, built in 1858, on Vine Lane. Hillingdon is a residential village rather than a shopping destination, and that suits a lot of people. Day-to-day needs are met by the parades along Uxbridge Road and Long Lane near Hillingdon Circus, with everything from convenience stores and pharmacies to takeaways and barbers. For a proper shop, Uxbridge town centre is about a mile and a half west, or two stops on the tube, with The Chimes and The Pavilions. Hillingdon Hospital on Pield Heath Road is the borough’s main acute hospital and a significant local employer. The Red Lion on Royal Lane is the historic village pub.

Hillingdon Court Park on Parkway is the main green space, laid out on land that was once part of the Hillingdon Court estate, with a bowling green, playground, formal gardens, an outdoor gym, a sports pavilion, tennis and two junior football pitches. Uxbridge Common, five acres of traditional village common with a pond, sits on the Hillingdon and Uxbridge boundary. Dowding Park, forty acres of parkland on the former RAF Uxbridge site with the River Pinn running through it, opened in 2018. Further west, the Colne Valley Regional Park, the Grand Union Canal and Denham Country Park open up a huge amount of walking and wildlife.

Hillingdon station is on both the Metropolitan and Piccadilly lines in Zone 6, is step-free from street to platform and has its own car park. Baker Street is around thirty-nine minutes direct on the Metropolitan, with King’s Cross St Pancras roughly forty-five. The Piccadilly gives a direct but slower all-stations run into the West End. Road access is excellent: the A40 Western Avenue runs along the northern edge at Hillingdon Circus, giving fast routes into central London and west to the M40 at Junction 1 and the M25 at Junction 16. Heathrow is around six or seven miles, usually fifteen to twenty-five minutes by car.
