RISING NUMBER OF FAMILIES IN THE PRIVATE RENTED SECTOR

Nearly one quarter of new tenancies agreed in the last year were for rentals where tenants included children in the household. Of these, half were for families that included one child, while 37% of tenancies involving children were for families with two children. These figures remain remarkably consistent across all regions of England and Wales. Among UK regions, households comprising three or more children account for between 12% (Yorkshire and the Humber) and 16% (West Midlands) of tenancies. There are over 500,000 more households with dependent children living in the private sector today than in 2010/11. In 2017/18 1.6 million households in the private rented sector included dependent children, up 37% from 1.1 million in 2010/11.
