Autumn must haves for family buyers – more storage, homework zones, soothing bedrooms

This year, autumn kicked off with wind and rain, sending most of us scurrying inside after a summer enjoying the sun. With evenings also quickly drawing in, the focus for buyers returns to demands for a sanctuary that they can escape to feel cosy, calm and relaxed – whatever time of day it is.
So, what can create that safe space that family buyers crave so badly this autumn?
- Storage and extra space
Buyers constantly demand more space – it’s usually one of the primary reasons for a move. Garage, for example, was the second most searched for keyword on Zoopla in the last two years, proving that buyers want additional space - whether it’s for their car, clutter, or to transform into living space.
Creating effective storage options in each room helps convince buyers that your property offers the space they are looking for. In the kitchen, for example, simple options such as pan organisers or tiered shelf risers make the most of space in cupboards and drawers that may otherwise appear to be bursting at the seams despite your radical decluttering efforts.
Storage options can also be integrated into otherwise dead spaces, such as under the stairs, effectively killing two birds with one stone. Your home will be working harder with space that would otherwise have been wasted.
- A quiet area for homework
Tired children coming home from school will likely have homework to complete. After their long summer break getting back into the structure of extra-curricular schoolwork can be tough, especially if they are trying to do it in a disorganised environment.
Providing a homework space, ideally other than their bedroom, can help them to focus more clearly. The beauty is that you may be able to dual-purpose such space, with a home office space for remote or hybrid working that suits both your buyer’s needs and their offspring’s.
A calm, organised space, whether in a dedicated room or a separate desk space or a dual-purpose space (such as a dressing table/desk), avoids the clutter and inconvenience of working on a dining room table and will ease the stress for all.
- Calming bedrooms
After the chaos of summer, buyers will also be looking to reestablish healthy bedtime routines for their families. Calming bedrooms that provide a haven of escape are attractive for everyone, from tired toddlers to tempestuous teens and parents alike.
Neutral, calming colours, organised rooms and sufficient space with organised storage once again will help potential buyers imagine the peace that could ensue as everyone heads to bed or to relax. Staging is also vital to create the welcoming environment you want to portray. Think cosy throws and autumnal duvet covers to generate a vibe that potential buyers will fall in love with and remove any items – especially unnecessary furniture – that may be overwhelming the space.
